Ukrainian Slavic Folk Metallers Chur return majestically with their sophomore full length 'Lykho' which delivers a new adventure that traditional Folk Metal bands dare not stray into, the mixture of Ukrainian music, Metal and their native language as well as the religious movement of Paganism results in Pagan Slavic Metal. Even dressed in traditional costumes make them distinguishable and it is this combo that gives them a chance to raise Ukrainian Metal even further, further than fellow countrymen Drudkh. The desire to protect from the ravages of time and from the evolution that usually inflects slowly the purity of the traditions, is probably the intention behind the folklore that feeding the glory of the Pagan belief. These words seems to reflect fully the essence of this Russian band led by Evgen Kucherov, and accompanied by various session singers and musicians. In fact, the band has declared since the beginning his detachment toward the modern folk scene. The word "Chur" means guardian, in the Slavic mythology. He's a protector of the tribal territories, that watches over his loved ones and his lands, defending them from the intrusions of the evil spirits and the attacks of the enemies (concept perfectly represented on the cover), the artwork was created by the same Evgen Kucherov (as well as singer and multi instrumentalist and main figure of the band) and represents more images painted in gouache in the traditional Ukrainian style with stylized drawing, with the eccentric colors and can fully describe the feelings and thoughts expressed in the songs. We don't talk simply about "folk metal" but we are talking about folk metal based on traditional melodic Slavic schemes, traditional instruments and on the popular choral vocals, without any "gothic" influence or any "extreme" element in the sound. However the strong folk base is combined with the typical classic metal (with the electric guitars that have a great rhythmic role and the simply and linear drum machine) in a very harmonious manner for a genuine and spontaneous result. The lyrics are in Ukrainian language and are based on the Slavic mythology, between epic poems and folk tales and names, figures belonging to the primordial tradition. The use of the voices results to be an unique approach to the singing and it's mainly divided in two parts: female vocals, which her interventions are always appropriate and very catchy, often in characteristic duet, and the voice of Kucherov, calm and deep like the voice of a perfect narrator. A sublime and excellent combination in its uniformity and spontaneity that can communicate the soul of their own land even if often you can't understand the words. So, music of Chur and its meaning succeed in this not easy intent. Finally an important work and with great consistency but at the same time by the easy and pleasantly listening. A band to compulsory add to the short list of the worthy names of the Pagan folk scene, currently not very prolific. Setherial Legion

Juz na wstepie opisu tego wydawnictwa mozna przeczytac, ze to nie folk metal, a "metalowy folk z tradycyjnymi slowianskimi szablonami melodycznymi, zagrany na recznie wykonanych instrumentach ludowych i wyspiewany w tradycyjny folkowy sposob, bez jakichkolwiek gotyckich wplywow i bez mieszczenia sie w metalowych standardach". Trzeba przyznac, ze jest w tym duzo racji, bo CZUR, choc bazuje na przesterowanych gitarach, perkusji, basie i klawiszach, to nie szczedzi przy tej okazji brzmien sopilki, dyrymby, drumli, liry korbowej, akordeonu czy innych nieokreslonych instrumentow, czym niewatpliwie urozmaica swoja muzyczna propozycje. "Liho" to ponad 75 minut zwawego, a czasem bardziej melancholijnego grania z bogatymi liniami melodycznymi, meskimi i zenskimi wokalizami, wykorzystujacego bliskie naszym sercom elementy ludowe. O ile na przyklad ARKONA, ktora przykula uwage juz nie tylko folk metalowych maniakow na calym swiecie, tworzy rzeczy przepojone duchem slowianskiej muzyki tradycyjnej, ale chwilami podane w bardzo agresywny sposob, tak CZUR jest bardziej wywazony i sklania sie mocniej ku pierwiastkom ludycznym, co objawia sie w bardzo rozny sposob. Raz jest bardziej lirycznie, do bolu melodyjnie i po prostu pieknie (np. w umieszczonej nie wiedziec czemu dwa razy na plycie kompozycji "Mat'i"), innym razem skocznie, wrecz punkowo. Zawsze jednak jest przekonujaco. Przykladem mieszania obu wspomnianych opcji jest "Wiesna" (na plycie pojawia sie w dwoch wersjach - tez nie wiadomo do konca po co), w ktorym spokojne momenty z zenskimi spiewami Wiktoriji Kumanowskajej zmieniaja sie dosc gwaltownie w szybki czad, po czym wszystko staje sie znowu bardziej kojace, a spiew ptakow pod koniec utworu po prostu powala hehe. Mozna by w tym momencie doczepic sie, ze niektore utwory wykorzystuja podobne rozwiazania co poprzednie i jest w tym troche racji, a zespol powinien w przyszlosci pomyslec nad nieco szerszym wachlarzem tworzonych przez siebie dzwiekow. Mimo to "Liho" to niezwykla podroz do swiata szanowanych przodkow, starych, niezmiennych tradycji i zwyczajow, budzacego sie zycia, regularnie nastepujacych zmian por roku, radosci i dumy z bycia Slowianinem. Jakkolwiek patetycznie slowa te nie zabrzmialy, CZUR jest brakujacym ogniwem miedzy swiatem metalu i folku, miedzy ognistymi dokonaniami ARKONY czy NOKTURNAL MORTUM a festynowym kiczem wielu finskich kapel, ktorych nazw tu nie przywolam, bo po co. Godne uwagi sa tez grafiki na okladce plyty i w dolaczonej do niej ksiazeczce prymitywistyczne, na wskros ludowe i bardzo symboliczne, bez calej tej cepeliady, do ktorej przyzwyczajano nas i ktora nas karmiono przez wiele lat w pseudo-socjalistycznej rzeczywistosci. Diovis
